THE MYSTERY OF THE VEIL: Part 1 - The Glory
Rabbi Ian K. Michaels
I am יהוה, that is MyName, and My glory I do not give to another…
....for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her…
[1 Corinthians 11:15a]
For upon all the glory shall be a covering
More than an issue of true biblical modesty, the veil upon the head of a woman has to do with the guarding over a glory which ultimately does not belong to her, but to YHWH and YHWH alone. It is our Creator’s prerogative to endow His various creations with a particular glory, yet, it can not be forgotten that that glory is His. When the glory is taken from YHWH, and a vain focus is brought to self, (as if we can take credit for anything apart from Him), the end result is a curse.
“All glory comes from God and is to be given to God. In Isaiah 42:8 and 48:11 He plainly, firmly, and significantly states – ‘I will not give My glory to another.’ That glory, because we are His creation, may rest upon us or be assigned to us, but ultimately it is to be returned to Him. In fact, we see that when it is not willingly returned to Him but rather claimed as a product or fashion of the created, rather than the Creator, the consequences are death and judgment.” [Gary Naler in his article entitled GLORY - www. garynaler.com]
Let’s look at some examples:
King Nebuchadnezzar took glory to himself incurring judgment.
The king spake and said, “Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?” While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, “O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken; the kingdom is departed from you. And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: They shall make you to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever He will.
King Belshazzar is given the writing on the wall and then killed. Daniel reminded this king of how his father Nebuchadnezzar was humbled to eat grass like a beast for seven years.
And you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this; but have lifted up yourself against the Master of heaven….and the Elohim in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified.
King Herod received worship as a god from the people on the day He was struck down dead by יהוה.
And immediately the angel of יהוה smote him, because he gave not Elohim the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
The pattern throughout creation and history shows that יהוה is jealous over His glory and covers it wherever it has been placed. The consistent pattern shows that יהוה’s endowed glory is set as a first covering, which requires a second covering to guard the first covering of glory.
THE EARTH – Earth’s first covering is the combination of the waters of the sea and the clouds which possesses glory as we are told in the Psalms;
His glory is above (or over) earth and heaven.
The glory over earth is clear. This glory is in the waters of the seas over the earth. But what is this glory above heaven? We find from scripture that the first heaven is our atmosphere (called “the firmament” in Genesis 1:7-8). Paul was caught up to the third heaven (2 Corinthians 12:2). Our first heaven is the firmament we call “the sky” where clouds form. The identification of the sea and the clouds as glory is affirmed in that יהוה’s glory appeared as a cloud (2 Chronicles 5:13-14). Over this glorious covering, above the waters and the clouds, was placed a second covering to cover the one endowed with glory.
And Elohim made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And Elohim called the firmament Heaven.
The waters above the firmament formed what has been called a canopy of crystallized water which formed a protection around the earth from the harmful rays of our sun during the days prior to the flood of Noah. Judgment always accompanies a removal of the second covering, which requires a substitutionary covering to thwart further judgment. In the case of the world-wide flood, the canopy of protection was broken and in its place, we have been given the ozone layer. We live in a time where the ozone is disappearing; an indication of the final judgment upon the earth.
OUR SOUL AND SPIRIT – The first covering is of course our body, endowed with a glory.
There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the earthly is another
[1 Corinthians 15:40]
The original secondary covering for man’s body was אור/Or which is “Light” and was replaced with the substitutionary covering of clothing. (In the phrase “Coats of Skins” in Genesis 3:21, “Skins” is עור which is interestingly quite nearly the same spelling as the word אור/Light). “Coats” is the word כתנות/Kathnoth which means a tunic or long coat. The same Hebrew word is used to describe the clothing of the priests. These were coats of long sleeves and reaching down to the ankles, covering both man and woman completely, just as the light had covered them before. Even in this modern wicked society, most everyone still instinctively knows that there is something unacceptable with nakedness in public and various laws are still in place to maintain a certain level of decency. Breaking those laws, one will incur legal as well as social resistance. In this we see that the removal of our substitutionary covering of clothing brings judgment from Elohim.
THE ARK OF THE COVENANT – The first covering was the Mercy Seat where the presence of YHWH rested to meet with man, which we are told possessed the glory.
And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy seat.
The continual cloud of incense served as the second covering over the first glorious covering above the Ark of the Covenant. When in transit, a substitutionary covering was placed over the Ark.
And when the camp sets forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and shall take down the covering veil, and cover the ark with it.
THE TABERNACLE – The first covering was the consecrated Tent over the Tabernacle.
And I (יהוה) will meet there (at the door of the tent of meeting) with the sons of Israel, and it shall be consecrated by My glory. And I will consecrate the Tent of Meeting and the altar.
This necessitated the second covering of the cloud by day and the fire by night. And how was there a substitute covering for the cloud and fire when traveling? This was achieved through the people paying a tax for the tent. This “atonement money” as it is called in verse 16 served as a covering (an atonement) for the people while the tent was in transit until the cloud by day and fire by night would once again cover the Tent of Meeting “that there be no plague among them” (see Exodus 30:11-16).
With these four examples, we can see an amazing consistency. The first covering is endowed with a glory that necessitates a second covering. Why? Perhaps because YHWH is jealous of His glory and will not share it with anyone. But, whatever the reason, we see a consistent pattern – the primary object is covered by the first covering with glory, and that glorious first covering is covered with a second covering. If ever the second covering is removed, a substitute second covering must be put in place to prevent judgment and death.
One cannot understand the issue of the glorious woman’s hair without understanding YHWH’s laws and patterns for covering His glory. The entire argument of the need for the woman to wear a head covering would be settled if one simply understood this single point. But rather than seek to understand, most would rather act on their own, with their separate erroneous and rebellious interpretations.Watchman Nee wrote that the western woman who does not see the need to cover her glorious hair is doubly disobedient in that she refuses to cover her hair and refuses to shave her hair off completely, as Paul instructed she should if she will not cover it.
For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
[1 Corinthians 11:6]
Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is glory to her?
[1 Corinthians 11:14-15]
YHWH has assigned a glory to the woman’s hair. Her hair is her first covering. The word for covering in verse 15 is περιβολαιου/peribolaiou which translates to a mantle. As we have learned, the first covering is endowed with YHWH’s glory, and this is once again exactly the case with regard to the woman’s hair. And as we have learned, this glorious first covering demands a second covering. The word for covering in verses 4, 6 & 13 is a different word than in verse 15. It is κατακαλυπτω/katakalupto which translates to cover wholly, hide. A cloth head covering is the necessary substitutionary second covering required to guard the glory that belongs to YHWH and YHWH alone This is a soundly established, clear and concise scriptural truth deserving our acknowledgment and application at all times, in every generation.
Consider the action taken with a woman suspected of unfaithfulness. In the law of a jealous husband, found in Numbers 5:11-31, a woman was brought before the priests to be judged. Before she was given the cup to drink, the covering was removed from her hair, perfectly in keeping with the pattern throughout the scriptures. Removal of the second covering that covers the first covering of glory is a sign of judgment. An uncovered head is a sign of unfaithfulness. Messiah is returning for a faithful remnant without spot or blemish. Let every wise woman of the remnant wear the symbol of faithfulness for the soon coming Husband of our souls!
Women (and men) who refuse to see what the scriptures teach on this subject will flock to teachers who tell them what they want to hear. Teachers who wear long beards and long robes like ancient prophets may have a great gimmick and appear to be authentic, but beware! LET NO MAN DECEIVE YOU! It is not a light matter when the glory of YHWH is left unguarded. There is a governmental order designed by our Creator and a glory assigned in the chain of command;
-Messiah is the glory of the Father. The Father covers His glory by covering Messiah.
-Man is the glory of Messiah. Messiah covers His glory by covering the Man in Him.
-Woman is the glory of Man. Man is to cover his glory by covering the Woman.
-The Woman’s Hair is the glory of the Woman. The Woman is to cover her glory by covering her hair.
In prayer, when a woman puts a veil upon her hair, she is in essence saying,” I come to my head’s Head with respect for and under his authority.” Doing otherwise, according to YHWH, is to shame her head and give no respect to the governmental order of His design.
In addition to the guarding of יהוה’s glory, which will thwart His judgment from every obedient woman, there is the issue of the symbol of power/εξουσιαν/exousian that she is to have upon her head for the sake of the angels (1 Corinthians 11:10). Why is there such resistance to the wearing of the cloth veil today? I believe it is two-fold. First, Satan knows of the glory issue and wants everyone everywhere to not give the glory back to יהוה, but instead take the glory unto themselves. The second reason is the power that the woman obtains in the spirit realm through her obedience to this simple command.
